The Young Enterprise team, Innova, enjoyed great success at the Young Enterprise Area Finals at Arup. The team created their own product, Animals on the Brink, a card trading game based upon animals which are critically endangered. With the aim of raising awareness of the plight of these animals – trying to educate young people about the estimated numbers and life expectancy – judges were particularly impressed with the ethical and environmental issues that the team had considered, including not having their cards laminated so that they could be recycled to reduce landfill.
The girls designed the cards, had them professionally printed by a local company, marketed their game on social media and sold it at the local trade fair in Touchwood, Solihull – where they were awarded Best Trade Stand.
The team then wrote a report about their journey before taking part in the Area Finals, where they were in direct competition against teams of sixth formers from other schools from the Solihull and Birmingham area. During the evening, the girls were interviewed by a panel of three judges on their business, answering questions, such as why they had come up with their game and what challenges had they faced, before then going onto present in front of other teams, judges, teachers and business advisors.
The girls were awarded Runner Up Best Company, narrowly missing out on the top prize, and were also awarded Best Customer Service.
The girls should be tremendously proud of their efforts and take confidence from their triumphs against strong competition going forwards.
