Last Thursday the Year 9 team played in the West Midlands Hockey tournament. They beat EHS 2 – 0, drew with KEHS 0 – 0 and beat University of Birmingham 2 – 0. This meant that they finished second in their group and played Solihull School in the semi-final. The result was 0 – 0 so the game was decided by taking penalty shuffles. This is where a player has 10 seconds to beat the goalkeeper on a one on one situation. Sharondip was amazing in goal and Saint Martin’s held their nerve to take their penalties. The Year 9 team emerged triumphant and went on to meet KEHS in the final.
The Year 9 team opened the scoring in the final. KEHS were soon fighting back and they also scored so the match finished 1 – 1. This meant more penalty shuffles and again Saint Martin’s held their nerve and took some amazing shuffles. This, together with Sharondip being superb in goal, meant that the Year 9 team won the final to become West Midlands Champions!
Well done to all of the players who showed a superb all round team performance. It was an extremely long and tiring evening but the team were a credit to Saint Martin’s. Congratulations to Amelia Bogira, Sharondip Jheeta, Nina Harper, Ellie Pimlott, Grace Harrison, Marianne Mahoney, Sophie Tudor, Charlotte Watson, Ella May, Grace Meehan, Karis Capelin, Joanna Minshull and Francesca Donovan.
The team now represents the West Midlands in the Midlands Round of the competition on 9 November.
