As part of the Year 9 History curriculum this year girls have been learning about the First and Second World Wars. On Tuesday, in order to develop their understanding further, they visited the Imperial War Museum and the Churchill War Rooms. In the Imperial War Museum they viewed the new centenary First World War exhibit, which included a model of a trench and uniforms to try on. They also explored the Family at War exhibit where they found out about the experience of the Allpress family during the Second World War.
We were very fortunate with the weather and after lunch we were able to walk between the two locations via the London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and the Cenotaph. In the Churchill War Rooms girls followed an audio guide through the cellars of the war rooms, where at the height of the Blitz, Churchill and his ministers conducted and won the Second World War. The girls found the day very informative, with Jessica commenting that “…being at the place where it all happened made everything we learned in class come to life.”
