“A problem is a question which you do not immediately know how to answer”
Four girls from Year 10, Shona, Elizabeth, Isabel and Hayley, were placed 4th out of 14 teams attending the Year 10 Maths Feast at Hillcrest School. The event is run by the Further Maths Support Programme and challenges competitors with problems presented in a variety of ways and using many different areas of Maths. In their favourite round the girls had 20 minutes to solve four problems out of a diverse set of six provided, making sure that they had explained their solution fully.
They chose to work on:
- a complex series of geometrical transformations,
- establish how to get four people across a narrow bridge in the minimum possible time,
- calculate how to get different vehicles on a ferry,
- schedule and cost a journey from Edinburgh to London via meetings in Manchester and Birmingham.
Good planning and teamwork were essential to get the most out of the day.
