Isabella Nicholson, Elizabeth O’Connor, Francesca Pearson and Madison Thureen from Year 8 have succeeded in gaining first prize for the University Challenge, part of the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. The girls competed against 15 other teams from schools across the Midlands at the Festival, held at the University of Birmingham. Their task was to identify five unknown substances as acids or alkalis, given only one reagent to use.
Dr Mark Read, Head of Department of Chemistry at the University congratulated the girls on their success and said “… I would like to echo several comments from my colleagues on how polite, enthusiastic and well-mannered your pupils were – a credit to Saint Martin’s” The team were awarded individual prizes, as well as a school prize worth £100. Congratulations to all 4 girls!
