Catherine and Sarah O’Connor, twin sisters from the Sixth Form, had the rare opportunity to play a concerto with the Solihull Symphony Orchestra last Saturday in Shirley Methodist Church. The girls performed the “Concerto for two flutes in G major” by Domenico Cimerosa as part of the Symphony Orchestra series of the “Rising Stars” concerts which offer talented young musicians resident in Solihull the chance to play a major concerto with orchestral accompaniment. The girls successfully auditioned last term and were selected from a strong field of young musicians.
Sarah and Catherine are taught by Mrs Thompson and have been learning the flute for eight years. Catherine achieved a distinction in her grade VIII flute examination and is currently working towards her ABRSM Diploma as well as Grade VII violin. Sarah, whose second instrument is the piano, will be taking her grade VIII Flute examination in the summer.
The girls overcame pre-concert nerves to produce a sparkling and confident performance of the concerto, displaying a high level of skill in both virtuosity and musicianship. It is credit to the girls and their teacher that they were able to tackle and deliver such a demanding piece in addition to their other commitments. We are all very proud of our rising stars!
