For the residential element of her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, Liz Gahan from our Sixth Form sailed from Cape Verde to Barbados in a catamaran. Liz, along with the rest of the crew, some of whom had not sailed before, completed the 2208 mile crossing of the Atlantic in a 14-metre catamaran.
In Liz’s words: “We set off in some very difficult weather that made the first couple of days both scary and exciting! However, it also meant that we were never short of wind, so we arrived 5 days early. I have been sailing for over 8 years and this was the first time that I had experienced waves of over 4.3 metres in size.
I enjoyed being able to see whales, dolphins and a shark. As well as this, the most fantastic thing was seeing the stars so clearly from the middle of the ocean because there were no other lights for 1000 miles.
Things did not always go smoothly as we had a water pump burst on the way. This 12 hour period was one of the scariest points but eventually we managed to fix the problem by draining the water and making our own water to fill the other tank.
I did enjoy getting back to Wi-Fi after 2 weeks! “.
