As part of their Enrichment Studies girls across the School have been reflecting on the UN International Day of the Girl Child. This is a United Nations General Assembly Resolution adopted in December 2011 to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
Girls in Senior School began their day by watching the Panorama programme about Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl and campaigner who was shot by the Taliban for campaigning for better rights for girls.
During the day girls in Year 7 and 8 considered their career aspirations as young women in the 21st century. They looked at how their choices were different to those available to their ancestors.
In Year 11 girls looked at how famous women are often inspiring role models for girls. They were tasked with writing an article for or against this view. As part of their Religious Studies lesson Year 11 looked at gender discrimination and considered the role of women in the Church and the New Testament teaching of attitudes to women.
In Junior School girls considered girls and women who inspire them. You can read some of their thoughts in Girls’ Voice.
