Year 11 and Sixth Form were privileged to hear from Dame Caroline Spelman MP this morning during form time. She spoke about life as a female MP, the role of an MP in the local community and the challenges facing the West Midlands following the results of the EU Referendum. She encouraged girls to follow a career in politics, explaining that women offer different insights into policy making, giving the example of transport. She said that men tend to look at reliability and efficiency, whilst women focus on safety and security. She gave many anecdotes about her time at Westminster referring to the unconscious bias she and other female MPs faced.
One of our Deputy Head girls said that she found the talk really valuable as Dame Spelman offered an insight into politics from a woman’s perspective. She also commented that it was inspiring to see how far Dame Spelman had succeeded in the world of politics.
